GLASGOW TOUR September 2024

A merry band of 15 members set off on an Arts Society tour of Glasgow with our experienced tour leader Jill Neilson at the helm … and what a treat we had.

Charles Rennie Macintosh has certainly made his mark on Glasgow and we all so enjoyed the delights of Hill House in Helensburgh designed for the publisher William Blackie. His very own house is reconstructed in the University of Glasgow’s Hunterian Museum and The House For Art Lover built in 1989 using plans which CRM submitted to an architectural competition in Vienna in 1901 but never built himself. It opened to the public in 1996.

The Burrell collection could have taken up all 3 days but we were expertly guided to the high points and we came away with definite plans to return.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum was also full of treasures, the high point here being Salvador Dali’s Christ of St John of The Cross.

We were entertained to a personal tour of Ardgowan House followed by delicious afternoon tea, and on our last day our driver took us to Culzean Castle where we were able to explore the castle and beautiful grounds at leisure whilst looking across the Firth of Clyde to Arran and the Mull of Kintyre in beautiful sunshine.
