CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER 2024

Dear Members,

I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all a “Very Happy Christmas”.

I hope you have now received your 2025 programmes and are looking forward to a great year ahead.

Peter Medhurst’s November presentation set the mood for the Festive Season. Sadly, those of us who were not able to be there also missed the very fitting tribute which Liz Stevens gave to our late past president, Sylvia Coppen-Gardner. Liz has kindly agreed to her words being printed here:

“Sylvia joined our Society right at the beginning in 1981.  She was an inspirational and very helpful member of our Committee.  She came to every meeting and took every AGM.  I'm sure that other past Chairmen will remember "..and now we come to Any Other Business, the Chairman's graveyard"  Terrifying!

There was one occasion when June Lisser was Chairman and the lecturer didn't turn up (every chairmans' nightmare).  Sylvia, who was a lecturer, said "Oh don't worry I have my notes in the car".    She came back and gave us a splendid lecture on glass.

Latterly, through ill health, she was unable to attend our lectures which is very sad as many members never met her.  Those of us who knew her miss her and will remember with gratitude and great affection.”

A very fitting tribute.

Our first lecture is on Thursday 9th January and I look forward to seeing as many of those who are able to be there.

Happy Christmas to you all,

Lis Holmes
